Toys for Tots1

Doing Business the Old Fashioned Way

It’s been two years since Susan Yurcak approached Device Solutions’ CEO Bob Witter about taking part in the “Toys for Tots” program during the holidays. “I just told him I thought it would be a good idea to give back to the community and he agreed,” says Yurcak. “I chose “Toys for Tots” because it’s run by the United States Marine Corps Reserve. Those soldiers sacrifice a lot to keep us safe, and this is one way we can repay them for their service.”

Each year, “Toys for Tots” collects and distributes toys to children whose parents cannot afford to buy them gifts for Christmas. Toys are collected by companies and organizations like Device Solutions, which agree to be drop-off sites. “Basically what that means,” says Yurcak, “is that we put “Toys for Tots” boxes and signs in our lobby and let the people and companies in our network know they can drop toys off during regular office hours. The only restrictions are that the toys have to be new and unwrapped, and none of them can be weapons or guns of any kind.”

The first year Device Solutions participated in the program, two boxes (approximately 100 toys) were filled. Yurcak’s goal for this year was to exceed last year’s total. “I sent everyone a note reminding them to bring in a toy,” says Yurcak. “However, we also gave them a second option. Those who didn’t have time to shop for a toy were encouraged to donate money. “

This year the campaign at Device Solutions raised $630, which was used to buy four bikes and two scooters online. “We also had a lot of nice toys donated by employees,” Yurcak adds, “including skateboards and some pretty cool electronics.”

The number of toys collected also grew from 100 to 200, filling four boxes and taking up so much room that it was impossible to transport everything in a truck or SUV. “We had to borrow a trailer to take it all down to the “Toys for Tots” center in Raleigh,” says Yurcak.

Needless to say, both Yurcak and Witter are proud of this year’s results, and look forward to seeing how they can get more companies involved next year. “Once again, the Device Solutions team answered the call for “Toys for Tots,” and helped make the holiday brighter for kids,” says Witter. “I am proud of all that this team has accomplished in 2015. To end the year with such generous giving speaks volumes about our culture.”

Yurcak couldn’t agree more, saying, “I’ve been with this company almost 11 years now, and it feels like family. In fact, it reminds me a bit of the companies where my parents worked. They stayed at those companies their entire careers and if anything went wrong, or someone needed help, they were there for one another. People at Device Solutions have good jobs and feel good about helping people who are less fortunate. I take great pride in that.”
